Michael Lacey And Jim Larkin Strive To Stand Up Against Injustices In Light Of Presidential Pardon To Joe Arpaio
In 2007, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin had published an article about the misworkings of the law enforcement system in the state of Arizona. A lot of the misworkings of the system was due to Joe Arpaio and the number of injustices he was bringing along with the system. He was known for a number of misdemeanors, such as bribing jury members to sway the opinion and outcome of cases, and also for wrongfully detaining people belonging to the Hispanic community in America.
When the article about Arpaio was published, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were heads of Village Voice Media, which was a publishing company. The company had under them, the Phoenix New Times, which was where the article was published. The article was meant to expose Arpaio and all of his wrongdoings with the help of bringing him to justice. This, however, led to a series of events which further stemmed the notion that Arpaio was involved with a lot of unlawful activities. The night after the article was released, both Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were woken up by law enforcement officers standing outside their doors, claiming that they were here to take them in. Even though both the men tried to call the cops, their pleas fell on deaf ears, since the people who they thought they could trust were the ones going against them in the first place. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were thereon, both handcuffed and taken in a black van to an undisclosed location.
They were kept there for forty-eight hours before they were released. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin knew that the only reason they were taken into false custody was that of the article that they published. However, freedom of speech is something that every citizen enjoys, and wrongful punishment for that can cause someone to face immense legal action. Following the arrest, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin decided to launch a case against Arpaio for the wrongdoings, to not just them, but the people of the Hispanic community. The case went on for three years, which ultimately led to Lacey and Larkin being given $3.75 million each for the injustices caused to them. They then used this money to set up the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund with the hope of being able to support people who have injustices inflicted upon them.
The fight against racial discrimination is not over yet. Recently, President Trump announced that he would be granting Presidential Pardon to Joe Arpaio, claiming that he has done a lot for the safety of the nation, and has been of excellent service to America. This pardon made it so that Arpaio wouldn’t have to serve a prison sentence, and he also would be let off for all the gruesome injustices that he had done.
With the pardon comes its way, Lacey and Larkin have their work cut out for them. They have to come forth stronger than ever and support people from the Hispanic community to prevent any more injustices from happening to them.
